Hi, and welcome back to our ecourse on packing and moving, brought to you by GoMovers.com. Today we've got a short lesson about a very important issue: when to move.
Sometimes you don't have a lot of say over when you get to move, as in the time of year. You've just gotten a new job and you have to start right away, so you're packing up and moving in the middle of winter in Chicago. Not the best timing.
If you have some flexibility in when you move, try not to move in peak moving season, which is the summer. Because so many people are moving at this time, the moving companies often have to hire temporary help to get them through the crunch.
These temporary workers may be very good or their inexperience and lack of long term commitment could have a negative impact on your move. If you have a choice, avoid moving during the movers' peak season. You'll probably save money and have a better move.
Other times to steer clear of are the beginning of each month and the end of each month. Renters' leases typically expire during those times so more people are moving then.
If you have a choice, choose the morning over the afternoon on moves that take less than a full day to complete. The crew will be fresher and you'll have more hours of daylight to complete the move, if you need them. Likewise, early to mid-week is usually less busy than Friday for local movers. If they can't move on a Saturday, many people like to move on a Friday so they can have the benefit of the weekend to get moved in.
So if you can't choose the season in which you are moving, at least try to pick the time of month (the middle) and the early part of the week for movers who are less rushed. It may be a little less convenient for you, but the odds are more time and care will be taken with your belongings if you follow these guidelines.
