Moving Services - Guide to Local Moves
A local move, means a shipment of goods where the origin and destination are within the same state and less than 100 miles apart. Moves that are still within the same state but are more than 99 miles from origin to destination are considered intrastate moves
and moves where goods travel across state lines - regardless of the distance, are referred to as interstate
moves.
Local Moving Quotes
Moving services charge for local moves on an hourly basis and you may be able to get an hourly rate over the phone. Your mover will still want to send an estimator out to your home to discuss the specifics that may affect the costs of the move, both at your home and your destination, and to estimate how much time will be needed. This way, you'll have the estimate in writing.
How much packing the local mover will handle for you and accessibility issues, like stairs, narrow streets and driveways, the distance your possessions will need to be carried from the truck to your door, etc. will all impact the estimated total.
The estimate you receive should be itemized in enough detail to show separate amounts for the movers (labor), the vans, any packing charges (labor and materials) and insurance costs. The estimate may or may not be a guaranteed price, depending on the extent and nature of items that are unknown at the time the estimate is prepared, such as the address of your final destination and accessibility issues at your destination.
If the local mover's estimate can't be guaranteed, it will be noted as subject to change and won't be binding on the mover. Still, you'll be able to compare hourly rates and the fees levied for any upcharges between various local moving services.
