Amtrak Vacations - Open Up New Possibilities

There are those who believe the only way to go on a long-distance vacation is by plane.

Then there are those who are allured by the journey itself. Not wanting to miss a thing, these people are drawn in by slow drives and plenty of scenery.

Journey lovers might find that Amtrak vacations offer a different twist on the good old car ride.

There are several different possibilities that open up when Amtrak vacations are considered.

Amtrak Rail Tours

The Amtrak company itself books special rail tours across the United States. Unlike regular train trips where going from Point A to Point B is on tap, these involve actual slow journeys through picturesque countryside.

The packages involved in Amtrak vacations are special trips that generally must be booked through Amtrak itself. They are offered at set times during the year and generally include hotel lodging in the price.

Some of the Amtrak vacation packages the company puts together include:

  • The American Heritage by Rail Tour. This involves several nights' hotel stays as the train makes stops in such cities as Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York. The highpoints of the tour include stops in some of America's earliest destinations.
  • Grand Canyon. This tour starts in Chicago and ends in Flagstaff. Over the course of several days, passengers will get to see some of the West's most interesting natural features, including the Grand Canyon.
  • West Coast. This tour begins in Seattle and ends after nine days in Los Angeles. It includes some of the natural features found along the route – the ones car travelers rarely have the opportunity to see.
  • Northern Border. This multi-day journey starts in Chicago and ends in Seattle. Along the way, passengers will see some of the sites famous along the northern border, including Glacier National Park.

In addition to its more formalized tours, Amtrak vacations are often crafted by passengers themselves. The Amtrak Auto Train, for example, is often used by vacationers to get from the Washington, D.C., area to Central Florida with their car in tow. This route runs daily, providing a perfect way for vacationers to enjoy the freedom of having their car along without all the hassles.

Amtrak vacations provide a different way for people to enjoy their leisure time. Rather than just flying to a destination, these trips allow the journey to be half the fun.
