Amtrak - Baggage & Shipping

Amtrak baggage and shipping services can make Amtrak transport easy. As you reach the Amtrak station, dragging your luggage behind you, uniformed Red Caps are on hand to provide a baggage-handling service for no charge. Once your baggage has been handled, the Red Cap will give you a claim check at the end. If you prefer handling your bags without help, self-service handcarts are available at many Amtrak stations. Before you enter the baggage check process, there are many different guidelines and restrictions to follow. Below you will find the most important to keep in mind.

Amtrak Carry-On Baggage Guidelines

When bringing carry-on baggage with you as you travel Amtrak, you don’t want to slow up the process by breaking one of the rules. For starters, there is a two-piece limit that each passenger may bring onboard. You should know that purses, suitcases, laptops, and baby-related items, such as a stroller are not included in this count. Each carry-on bag should weigh less than 50 pounds and not exceed the size dimensions of 28x22x14 inches. Visible tags are required for each carry-on bag, displaying the name and address of the owner. Most often, special items are allowed onboard with passengers when they can easily fit inside the train. This may include ski equipment, snowboards, or golf clubs.

Amtrak's Checked Baggage Guidelines

A limit of three pieces for checked luggage is allowed for each passenger. If you are carrying more than three bags, you may bring an additional three pieces for the charge of $10 each. There is a 50-pound limit imposed on checked luggage, which should measure 36x36x36 or less. The name and address of the owner of each bag should be attached by a tag. Free I.D. tags are available at the station and can also be obtained from crewmembers. Baggage should be checked up 30 minutes prior to departure. After your ride with Amtrak, you should have photo identification ready to claim your luggage.

Unacceptable Items

When traveling with Amtrak, there is an assortment of items that are not allowed for carry-on or checked baggage. Any type of weapon, such as a gun, explosives, bullets, or a knife is prohibited. Passengers cannot carry large, sharp objects on their person. Flammable gases or liquids, chemicals, mace, or acid are not allowed for travel. Pets (with the exception of service animals) are not allowed to travel on Amtrak as well.

Shipping With Amtrak

While Amtrak accommodates passengers and their baggage, trains also facilitate the shipping of small packages to more than 100 cities. Offering various rates and schedules, express shipping is just one of the many ways Amtrak helps the public and their items reach their proper destinations.

The total shipment weight of a small package order is 500 pounds with a weight limit of 50 pounds for each item. Each item should measure no more than 3 ft x3 ft x 3 ft. Heavy or commercial shipping is available. Each item should weigh no more than 100 pounds with a size limit of 4ft x4ft x 4ft. Human remains are also allowed to travel through the Amtrak service passing from one station to another. When dealing with smaller stations, it is the responsibility of a funeral director to load and unload the shipment on and off of the train.
